What is prayer? Some say it is a waste of time, others say it is talking to our Father. What is it really?
According to “The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language” prayer is”
prayer (prâr) n. 1.
- a. A reverent petition made to God, a god, or another object of worship.
- b. The act of making a reverent petition to God, a god, or another object of worship.
2. An act of communion with God, a god, or another object of worship, such as in devotion, confession, praise, or thanksgiving: One evening a week, the family would join together in prayer. 3. A specially worded form used to address God, a god, or another object of worship. 4. prayers A religious observance in which praying predominates: morning prayers. 5.
- a. A fervent request: Her prayer for rain was granted at last.
- b. The thing requested: His safe arrival was their only prayer.
6. The slightest chance or hope: In a storm the mountain climbers won’t have a prayer. 7. Law
- a. The request of a complainant, as stated in a complaint or in equity, that the court grant the aid or relief solicited.
- b. The section of the complaint or bill that contains this request.
According to this it is the act of approaching God with our petitions requesting what we feel we need. In reality it is talking to our Father and asking Him for our daily needs and thanking Him for the blessings He gives us as we walk through this world. Some say when we pray we should go to our “prayer closet” and shut the rest of the world out. This is half right, but only half right. We are to be praying to God daily and without ceasing. Does this mean we walk around with our head down and our hands folded all day? NO, this means we are to talk to our Father as we would talk to our earthly father or anyone else we see on a daily basis. We go to a quiet place to pray and meditate waiting on the Lord to give us an answer. However, as we walk through our day we are to be praying(talking) to our Father in Heaven and listening for His response. We can go to Him with petitions, needs, sorrows, but also with our joys, praises, psalms, songs and much more.
